Dermatology appointments

Skin cancer checks

New Zealand has very high rates of skin cancer and regular checks with a Dermatologist can detect lesions early. Prepare for your appointment by noting new or changing skin lesions. On the day it’s best to come without makeup or nail polish.

Common skin problems

Diagnosis and treatment of common problems such as acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, warts, hair and nail disorders with subspecialty interest in allergic contact dermatitis and rare skin conditions.

Vulval skin conditions

Dr Kennedy works at the vulva clinic at National Women’s Health and has expertise in vulval skin conditions including clinical diagnosis, biopsy and management of complex cases.

Patch testing

Patch testing is used to diagnose skin contact allergy. This is a type of eczema which appears on the skin after direct contact with a particular allergen.

Contact eczema appears slowly, usually 1-2 days after exposure. It can develop at any time in a person’s life, even after years of exposure without problems.

Patch testing is different from skin prick testing, which tests for immediate reactions to substances such as food, dust mites or pollen. In contrast, patch testing is for allergens in direct contact with the skin surface.

Examples of common contact allergens:

  • Metals such as nickel in jewellery

  • Hair dye

  • Fragrances and plant-derived substances

  • Acrylates in nail cosmetics

  • Rubber

  • Adhesives and glue

Referrals to discuss patch testing with Dr Kennedy can come from your GP or another specialist.
